Washer won't drain or spin? What to check first

By the technicians at Maximum Appliance Repair. Updated

A washer that won't spin often isn't broken. Many machines stop spinning on purpose when something is off-balance or can't drain. These checks work on most front-load and top-load washers. On an LG with an OE code, see our LG OE error guide.

Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you open panels, and shut off gas or water if you'll be near those lines.

1. Rebalance the load

One heavy item, like a bath mat or a single pair of jeans, can make the washer refuse to spin. Redistribute the load or add a couple of towels, then run a Drain and Spin cycle.

2. Check the lid or door lock

Washers won't spin unless the lid or door locks. Make sure it closes fully and nothing is caught in the latch. A clicking lock that never engages, or a door lock light that keeps flashing, may mean a failed lock.

3. Check the drain hose

Pull the washer out carefully and look at the drain hose. A kink, a crushed section behind the machine, or a hose pushed too deep into the standpipe can stop drainage or siphon water out. Your installation manual gives the right depth for your model.

4. Clean the pump filter (most front-loaders)

Front-load washers have a small access panel at the bottom front. With the washer unplugged and towels down, drain the water through the small hose, then unscrew the filter. Socks, coins and hair ties caught here are a classic cause.

5. Check the cycle and spin settings

Some cycles, like Hand Wash or a No Spin option, spin slowly or not at all. Make sure the spin setting isn't turned off.

6. Note any error code

Write down the code on the display. It tells our technician where to start, and the manual may list a simple fix.

When to call a technician

Call us if water still won't drain, if you hear the pump hum without moving water, if it hums but the drum won't turn, or if it smells like burning. A failed pump, lid switch, door lock, drive belt, motor coupler or control needs a technician.

Questions

Why won't my washer spin when it's not draining?

Most washers won't spin with water in the tub, as a safety and balance measure. Fix the drain problem (hose, filter or pump) and the spin usually comes back.

Can I drain a washer by hand?

Yes. On front-loaders, use the short drain hose behind the filter panel. On top-loaders, bail the water into a bucket. Unplug the washer first.
