Samsung refrigerator not cooling? Check these first
Updated October 25, 2026
If the lights work but the fridge is warm, the problem is often simple. Try these checks in order.
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you open panels, and shut off gas or water if you'll be near those lines.
1. Make sure it isn't in demo mode
Many Samsung refrigerators have a demo (display) mode that keeps the lights and display on but turns cooling off. Some show "OF OF" on the display. Your owner's manual lists the button combination to turn it off; on many models you hold two buttons for a few seconds.
2. Check the temperature settings
Set the refrigerator to 37°F and the freezer to 0°F. After a change, give it up to 24 hours to settle.
3. Clear the air vents
Cold air comes from vents at the back of each section. Food packed against them blocks airflow, so the front of the fridge runs warm.
4. Check the door seals
Close the door on a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the seal isn't holding. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water and make sure nothing keeps the door from closing.
5. Clean the condenser coils
Unplug the refrigerator first. On most models the coils are behind the bottom back panel; vacuum the dust off. Dusty coils make the compressor work harder and cool less.
6. Look for ice on the back wall
Frost or a sheet of ice on the back panel, or a fan you can't hear, usually means the defrost system isn't working. Unplugging the fridge for a day with the doors open can melt it, but if the ice comes back, the defrost system needs a repair.
When to call a technician
Call us if it still isn't cooling after these checks, if you hear clicking with no cooling, or if ice keeps building up on the back wall.
