Ice maker not making ice? A step-by-step check

Updated October 25, 2026

Most ice maker problems come down to power, cold or water. Check them in this order.

Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you open panels, and shut off gas or water if you'll be near those lines.

1. Make sure it's on

Ice makers have an on/off switch, or a wire arm that turns production off when it's raised. Turn it on, or lower the arm.

2. Check the freezer temperature

Set the freezer to 0°F. If the freezer is running warm, the ice maker won't cycle, and that's a cooling problem to fix first.

3. Check the water supply

Make sure the water valve to the fridge is open and the line behind it isn't kinked. If the water dispenser is slow too, the problem is upstream of the ice maker.

4. Check the water filter

An old filter slows the water to a trickle. If you just replaced it, make sure it's seated and locked. Replace it if it's past its date.

5. Look for a frozen fill tube

If water reaches the fridge but not the ice tray, the small fill tube may be frozen. Turning the ice maker off for a few hours can let it thaw.

A new ice maker or a newly installed fridge usually needs up to 24 hours to make its first batch.

When to call a technician

Call us if the ice maker still won't fill or cycle, if it leaks, or if the ice is small or hollow. A failed water inlet valve or ice maker module needs a technician.
