Dishwasher not draining? How to fix standing water
Updated October 25, 2026
A little water left in the sump is normal on some models. A puddle above the filter isn't. Here's what to check.
Safety first: unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before you open panels, and shut off gas or water if you'll be near those lines.
1. Turn it off and bail out the water
Turn the dishwasher off at the switch or breaker. Scoop the standing water out with a cup and soak up the rest with a towel.
2. Clean the filter
Most dishwashers have a filter in the floor of the tub. Twist it out, rinse off food and grease under the tap, and lock it back in.
3. Run the garbage disposal
The dishwasher usually drains through the disposal. Run the disposal with cold water to clear it. If the disposal is brand new, the knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet may still be in place.
4. Check the drain hose and air gap
Look under the sink for a kinked or crushed drain hose. If you have an air gap (a small cap next to the faucet), pull the cover off and clear any debris.
5. Listen during the drain
Start a cycle and cancel it to force a drain. A hum with no water moving, or no sound at all, points to the drain pump.
When to call a technician
Call us if water still won't drain, if it leaks onto the floor, or if you see an error code. Don't pour drain cleaner into a dishwasher; it can damage seals and the pump.
